I am the owner and sole proprietor of Knotting-Well Creations, a handmade macramé business located in Wichita, Kansas.
The story of Knotting-Well Creations began in a very simple and unexpected way. I started making macramé items because I was bored and wanted something creative and productive to do with my time. What started simply as a way to keep myself occupied soon became something I enjoyed and took pride in creating.
As I continued making macramé pieces, people began noticing my work and showing an interest in purchasing the items I made. What began as a hobby quickly turned into actual sales. During my first two months of making and selling my macramé items as a hobby, I sold a substantial number of pieces. Those early sales were an important turning point for me. They showed me that people were willing to pay for the things I was creating and that my hobby had the potential to become more than just something I did to pass the time.
Rather than beginning with a large investment or an elaborate business plan, Knotting-Well Creations grew naturally from customer interest and actual sales. Seeing people appreciate my handmade work encouraged me to take the next step and establish the activity as a legitimate small business.
Knotting-Well Creations operates as a sole proprietorship owned and operated by myself. The business creates and sells handmade macramé and textile products, which may include wall hangings, plant hangers, home décor, ornaments, accessories, custom pieces, and other handcrafted creations.
The business also has a personal community tradition during the Christmas season. I make small handmade macramé ornaments and share them throughout the buildings where I live. Whenever I see a Christmas tree in a building, I hang a few of my handmade ornaments on it. If the ornaments disappear because someone takes one home, I simply make more and replenish the tree. I enjoy knowing that something I created can bring a little Christmas cheer to someone else. I do this without expecting anything in return.
My goal is to continue developing Knotting-Well Creations gradually and responsibly. I want to build upon the customer interest that first demonstrated the potential of the business, improve my products, reach additional customers, and create a sustainable small business based on handmade craftsmanship.
The Science of the Knot (Yes, There's Science)
There is a specific biomechanics to knotting. When you run a string between your thumb and fingers, you activate the fine motor skills of your hands, which doctors link directly to cognitive processing and emotional regulation. The rhythmic motion of a "Knot" being woven over and under itself is a full sensory experience.
In other words: macramé is basically brain yoga. With rope.
No machine can replicate the tension of a human hand. A machine applies uniform force. Boring, predictable, soulless force.
A human applies force based on intuition — adjusting pressure to ensure the cord doesn't fray, creating curves that are symmetrical yet organic. This is the "human factor" that gives handmade macramé knots their aesthetic charm.
